HEAR FROM OUR MEMBERS

Vice Director’s Letter

When I joined HCCG, I knew I didn’t want to work for McKinsey after graduation. I came to Harvard thinking that I was going to do research and go to grad school, and for the most part that hasn’t changed. I joined HCCG primarily because I realized that if I never exposed myself to industry, I’d live my entire life never understanding what goes on outside of a university. I study Physics and CS - I knew nothing about finance or economics, and certainly nothing about consulting.

This is all to say that when we say at info sessions that “there’s no traditional applicant to HCCG”, we’re not messing with you just to increase our application count. This group has two missions - to provide high quality work to clients, and to provide members with a supportive, educational, and fun experience. We provide better work to clients when ideas come from different people from different backgrounds, and the group is more interesting and educational when we have diversity of thought and background.

I applied to this group to expose myself to business, but stayed because of the people in it. I got to know the other 5 people on each my case teams super well, including working together on research, but also through going out to meals, playing paintball, tons of coffee and pastries, and traveling. Outside of the case teams, there are so many fun events throughout the semester as well. Final party gets the publicity, but I personally enjoyed the more intimate gatherings - Study Breaks, including petting puppies (I will send you pictures of my dogs if you email me), Opening Banquet (a group-wide dinner at the beginning of the semester), and Takes Boston (concerts, restaurants, food tours, other activities in the greater Boston area) are my personal favorites.

In short, I highly encourage you to consider HCCG not only for consulting experience, but as part of your more general experience at Harvard. I’ve gotten so much out of this group that’s beyond consulting skills, and I’ve done it alongside many people who are here to explore as well.

I’m always happy to go much more in depth about anything that we do - please reach out to us at info@harvardconsulting.org, and one of Kevin, Sophia, or myself will respond!

Student Testimonials

My work in HCCG continues to be one of the best parts of my college experience. The students are vibrant and supportive, the work is dynamic and challenging. The opportunity to engage so intimately with industry leading clients is unparalleled. Just as HCCG constantly strives to produce the best product for its clients, so too does it strive to constantly improve the experience of all its members.

Joining HCCG was one of the best decisions I made my freshman fall. HCCG provides the unparalleled opportunity to do meaningful work for real clients right from the get-go, in a work environment that’s modeled off the industry’s best. It’s helped me build valuable analytical and communication skills that I can use in future internships and jobs. Even more importantly, it’s a thriving community — for new analysts especially, the many social outings are a great way to build friendships and find mentors.

My semester as an analyst has been extremely rewarding and intellectually stimulating. As a first-year student that didn't really know what "consulting" meant, I was able to learn so much about the profession and gain firsthand experience engaging with industry clients with real problems. I think the tight knit community you get to form with your case team—from weekly meetings to team dinners and outings—is one of the most valuable things you can get out of the HCCG experience. The guidance that my case team leader and associates provided were extremely helpful, and I encourage anyone looking for a community of exceptional mentors and peers to consider applying to HCCG!

HCCG provides its members with a unique opportunity to work in teams to solve real problems for large businesses, non-profits, and startups. The combination of in-depth casework and fun social events creates a strong community that fosters both personal and professional development. HCCG has been one of my favorite parts of my Harvard experience and I’d strongly encourage anyone interested to apply!

I joined HCCG my sophomore fall with very little previous business experience and found a community of fellow analysts willing to collaborate with one another, learn from each other, and go on outings together. On the other hand, the upperclassmen in the group made themselves available to answer my questions and to voluntarily mentor me about HCCG work, finding internships, or anything school / life related! Outside of the community aspect, being able to tackle relevant problems every week and discuss them with my case team has given me a lot of new ways to look at different problems. Looking back, I can confidently say HCCG has some of the most committed, friendly, and driven people at Harvard.

Before I joined HCCG, I didn't even know what consulting was. Despite some initial anxiety, however, I soon found that all the resources that I needed were freely available. Being entrusted with responsibility from the start was very conducive to personal growth, as were the frequent opportunities for feedback. On the social front, there are plenty of opportunities to meet people outside of your case team (and eat free food). I would encourage anyone unsure about applying to come to the info sessions and talk to current members.
